Tips for Landing Your First Apprenticeship

Starting your journey in the skilled trades is an exciting and rewarding path. Not only can you earn while you learn, but you’ll also gain practical, hands-on experience that will set you up for a fulfilling career. Landing that first apprenticeship can seem like a daunting task, but with the right approach, you'll be on your way to success in no time. Here’s how you can increase your chances of landing your first apprenticeship and start building your future.

1. Understand What Apprenticeship Involves

An apprenticeship is more than just a job—it’s a structured training program, involving both in-school and practical hands-on learning. You’ll work under the supervision of a seasoned professional, learning the ins and outs of your chosen trade. Along the way, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the field and earn a recognized credential at the end. Keep in mind, most apprenticeships can last anywhere from two to five years, depending on the trade you choose.

2. Choose the Right Trade for You

Before diving into apprenticeship applications, take time to figure out which trade aligns best with your interests and strengths. Some trades are more hands-on, while others may require problem-solving or technical skills. Deciding whether you want to work in a residential or commercial setting can also make a difference. For instance, some trades vary greatly depending on the environment—working on a house is quite different from tackling a large industrial project.

3. Research Apprenticeship Opportunities

Getting your foot in the door means knowing where to look. Start by reaching out to friends, family, or industry contacts who might be able to connect you with apprenticeship opportunities. Don’t forget about online job boards, trade unions, and industry associations, as they often have valuable listings. If you’re unsure where to start, the Tools in the Trades Boot Camp is an excellent resource that provides hands-on training, networking opportunities, and even free starter tool kits!

4. Build a Strong Resume

Your resume is your first impression, so make it count. Even if you’re new to the trade, showcase your work ethic, eagerness to learn, and any relevant coursework or skills you’ve acquired. You might not have much field experience yet, but highlighting your enthusiasm and adaptability can help you stand out.

5. Ace the Interview

Landing an interview is an exciting step, but it’s important to prepare thoroughly. Practice answering common questions with a friend or family member to boost your confidence. Be ready to explain why you’ve chosen your trade, how you handle challenges, and what makes you a great fit for the apprenticeship. Show that you’re motivated, hardworking, and ready to learn from the best.

6. Take Advantage of School Programs

If you’re still in high school, you’ve got a head start! Take advantage of programs like Specialist High Skills Majors or dual-credit courses, or Ontario Youth Apprenticehip Program (OYAP), which allow you to develop trade-specific skills while earning credits toward your diploma. Be sure to connect with your guidance counsellor to learn more about apprenticeships and sponsorship opportunities that could be a perfect fit for you. You can also explore college courses or pre-apprenticeship programs.

7. Stay Open to Learning

Apprenticeships are all about growth—both personally and professionally. You’ll have the chance to learn from experienced tradespeople who’ve been in the industry for years, so keep an open mind, ask questions, and soak up as much knowledge as possible. The more you’re willing to learn, the more successful you’ll be in the long run.
