Plumbers can be employed by construction companies, plumbing contractors, and maintenance departments, or can be self-employed. They typically work a full-time, standard workweek, but may require a flexible schedule – though self-employed plumbers can set the hours that works best for them. As with many careers in construction, there tend to be peak periods that lead to busier times depending on the sector and region you work in. Plumbers can work indoors and outdoors, solo, or in collaboration with other construction professionals. It is physically demanding work but rewarding to see the fruits of your labour.
Your first step is an apprenticeship. Once completed, there may be additional tests and licences required to further your career, as well as continuing education to maintain your certifications. When working for a company or agency, you can advance to a supervisory position, work towards a specialty, or go another route and choose to start your own business. This career has the option to obtain a Red Seal certification. This is a seal on your provincial or territorial trade certificate that shows you have the knowledge and skills necessary to work in your trade all across Canada.
